BLOCKTOWN  CEMETERY,

previously known as Block School House Cemetery

Pompey, New York

Updated by John Rudy, Pompey Resident & Eagle Scout

I restored this cemetery for my Eagle Scout project, and thus have a complete listing of it's residents.

First, the cemetery's true name is Blocktown Cemetery, as listed on town deeds.  Located on no. 5 Rd. at the corner of Pompey Center Rd. in Pompey.  The earliest burial we've found occured in 1811, the last being in 1901.  Blocktown Cemetery is a real gem, set back from the road on a low rise in a grove of mostly maple trees.  The area is the final resting place of between 40 and 50 people.  Attached is a list of every tombstone we came upon in the plot, each with name, birth and death dates. I have boatloads of information also, ie. condition of the stones, location, dimensions and such.  If anyone would like this info, please, don't hesitate to E-Mail me at: TJJohn12@twcny.rr.com   The full book produced for the project is available for viewing at the Pompey Town Museum, Rt. 20, Pompey Center.  The museum is open Sundays from 2-4 p.m.

The following list appears in Inscriptions from Cemeteries in Onondaga Co. taken from notes by William Martin Beauchamp, Vol. 2.  For those seeking additional information, an excellent list of markers and burials is found in Pompey - Our Town in Profile, Township of Pompey, 1976, a two-volume set printed by Central New Yorker, Syracuse, N.Y.  For more information contact town historian Sylvia Shoebridge, 2327 Berry Rd., Lafayette, NY 13084.
