Oakwood Cemetery, one of the City of Syracuse's oldest, largest and most
historic non-denominational cemeteries, is offering a tour at 2 p.m., Sunday,
September 26, 1999. "See the mausolea of Syracuse salt barons," the
notice says -- referring to one of the area's most important early industries
(early to mid 19th C.), obtaining salt by evaporation from the local naturally
occuring salt springs, to be marketed in various places and for various
purposes. The cemetery entrances at Comstock Avenue and East Colvin
Street are mentioned, I'm not sure exactly where one ought to assemble.
Might be wise to phone the listed #, (315) 449-9226. I am not personally
involved in offering the tour; I saw the notice in the paper.
Oakwood is always well worth a trip, any time of year except deep-snow
season. It's really huge and beautiful, located not far from Syracuse
University and from downtown Syracuse, near Route 81's exits 17 or 18,
and
not too far from Rte. 90/the NYS Thruway, exit 36. E-mail me
for directions if you're coming from outside the area and/or feel stymied
by Rte. 81's being partially blocked off due to construction in this area
on the southbound side.
