OAK HILL (COWLES or WEST) CEMETERY

Town of Otisco, New York

Submitted by Fran Mosconi

Submitted by Kathy Crowell

This cemetery is also known as Cowles Cemetery or West Cemetery.  It is located about two miles west of the village of Otisco, on the north side of Otisco Road between Canty Hill Road and Oak Hill Road.  It is old and rather small but well kept up.  It has no sign giving its name.  The information submitted here is a compilation of readings taken at the cemetery by Fran Mosconi in 1998, with reference also to the typewritten roster of those buried there prepared by Clyde B. Wood and Leon M. Peters on 1 August 1960.

Surnames are listed alphabetically; individuals are not necessarily alphabetical within families, in order to maintain clarity of tombstones’ notes as to marriage, parenthood and the like.  Individuals of the same surname are often but not always buried near one another.  Maiden names, or persons of differing surnames obviously buried with one another, are cross-referenced when possible.  A number of the headstones are eroded and/or toppled, and difficult to try to read.  Some are obscured by hedges which have grown in the ensuing years.  Some people buried here appear to have family members buried at the cemetery on Octagon Road, Otisco.  Note the many deaths in 1843.

[These three individuals are memorialized on one stone.  Wood reads their

very name of Anson Gilbert.  Could Bardwell be a maiden name, Gilbert the
surname of one husband, and Harty another relative? ]
