The Thorn Hill Cemetery, commonly referred to as the Rose Hill Cemetery, was probably set apart for a burying ground by the First Baptist Church of Marcellus shortly after the erection of the first meeting house in 1816. Like the Marcellus Village Cemetery, the one at Rose Hill is the final resting place of many early settlers, particularly of those who settled in the southern part of the town. Among them is Rhoda Cody Reed, a pioneer widow who came alone on horseback to establish a claim at Clintonville in the 1790's. In May of 1897, the trustees of the Rose Hill Baptist Church were authorized to lease the ground, which had been designated as a cemetery, to an association called the Thorn Hill Cemetery Association. The lease was to run for a period of ninety-nine years, or for as long as the association should remain in active operation. The cemetery is presently very well maintained and its gravestones provide an important historical record. (from Nine Mile Country, by Kathryn C. Heffernan, Visual Artis Publications, Inc., 1978, p. 201) (Copyrighted by the Board of Trustees, Marcellus Free Library)
The following includes both mortuary records and genealogy notes from the Town of Spafford, Onondaga County, as compiled by Captain George Knapp Collins, and published by the Onondaga Historical Association, Dehler Press, 1917. Also contained are genealogy notes from and gravestone readings. Note that only those names with an * (asterisk) are actual burials in Thorn Hill Cemetery, as recorded by the Thorn Hill Cemetery Association.
