MARQUIS LAFAYETTE PECK  b.1825 - d.1904

Marquis Lafayette Peck was born in Madison County, New York, April 11, 1825, to James and Sarah (Knowles) Peck.  On

April 8, 1851, he married Sarah E. Fritcher, daughter of Michael and Phebe Fritcher of Bridgeport, NY.  Marquis and Sarah Peck had four children:

                1.  Mary J. Peck, b.1851, married 1873 James Hood Mathews.  James was son of Joseph L. and Mary Ann (Hood) Mathews.  His parents, brother Fred, and sisters Mary, Sarah, and Josephine are all shown in MLP's dairies.  James appears in the diaries as James Mathews, J.H. Mathews, Jim, and JHM.   In 1896 James Mathews left Mary (they divorced about 1907) and the 1900 Onondaga census shows him living in Manlius in the household of his brother, Fred Mathews.  James Mathews continued to have a friendly association with his in-laws.    James and Mary Mathews had three children:

                                1. William (Will/Willie) Henry Mathews, b.1875, married Anna Wellman

                                2.  Raymond (Ray) P. Mathews, b.1883, married Sophie _?_

                                3.  Ethel Mathews, b.1885, married Ray Clifton

Note: By 1910, James was living in Skagit Co. Washington, with his 2nd wife, Allie Everett (Summers) Mathews - James and Allie had two daughters:

1.  Josephine Hood Mathews

                                                2.  Helen June Mathews

                2.  Sarah Frances, b.1855, d.1862

                3.  Charles M. Peck, b.1862, married May Sheffield

                4.  Edith (Eda) Peck, b.1872, married Frank W. Gridley, they had one child:

                                1.  Helen Frances Gridley

The following diary entries have been abstracted from the original diaries kept by Marquis L. Peck.  They were inherited by a granddaughter, Ethel (Mathews) Clifton, passed on to a great-granddaughter, Ruth (Mathews) Kempton, and generously shared with my mother, Helen June (Mathews) Burns, during the 1970's.  My mother made a handwritten abstract from the original diaries in which she faithfully included all the names mentioned.  Marquis L. Peck used his diaries not only as a record of daily events, but as a journal for all his expenses and purchases.  Many of these are shown in this abstract, but many entries consisting only of financial transactions have been omitted.  I have included all names which were in his original diaries.  Some pictures were handed down to my mother from her father, James H. Mathews, and others have been furnished by Carole (Kempton) Anderson, great-great-granddaughter of Marquis L. Peck.

Sarah (Fritcher) Peck - from newspaper clipping at time of her marriage to Edward Baldwin

Peck-Baldwin Wedding
(Newspaper clipping, probably 1914)
Mrs. Sarah Peck is oldest bride of the season.  Fayetteville woman 82 is the bride of Californian, 69.  Lovers for years, couple separated when children in Fayetteville; he went to Los Angeles, but has returned frequently on visits.

Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Peck aged 82 years is the oldest June bride in Syracuse this year.  Mrs. Peck’s marriage to Edward Irving Baldwin of Los Angeles, California was solemnized Saturday evening at 8 o’clock by the Rev. Dawley, pastor of the Cent. Baptist Church.
Mr. & Mrs. Baldwin were married Saturday night at the home of the groom’s brother A. R. Baldwin.  It was a quiet wedding with only a few relatives present.  The groom is a resident of Los Angeles where he has a large post card studio.  Mrs. Baldwin has a daughter (Mary Peck Mathews) living in Los Angeles and another
(Edith Peck Gridley) living in New York.  Her son Charles Peck is a resident of Syracuse.  Her husband (Marquis L. Peck) died many years ago as did Mr. Baldwin’s wife.
The elderly couple were brought up together in Fayetteville where they were intimate friends.  After Mr. Baldwin moved to California and his bride of Saturday came to Syracuse, their paths separated and neither met again until after each had been married and bereaved.  In the years since then, Mr. Baldwin has made several trips to Syracuse and Fayetteville revisiting old friends.
The wedding was quiet.  A few old friends were there and there were some flowers and music as the stately white haired bride and groom took their places before the minister.  After the wedding they went quietly to the brides’ home.  No mad scramble for a honeymoon trip for them.  They preferred to sit by the fire and talk over happy days which have been as well as to replan the rest of the sunny life that is to be when they journey to California to make their home.
Both bride and groom are said to be well to do.  Her health remarkably preserved and her age is suspected by few.  She looks but little older than the groom though she is his senior by 13 years.
Friends in Syracuse have heard the newly made bride and groom discussing with the interest of a very young honeymoon couple a rose-twined bungalow in California where they are to pass the remainder of their lives.  The wedding has been considered by friends in the same light as any wedding, even of young people.  No one had any objections.  The brides’ son attended the wedding.
Both the bride and groom told their children of what they were going to do.  The groom has 5 children many of whom live in the west, and 2 grandchildren.  The bride also has grandchildren.
The bride is rather short and plump.  Noted for the exquisite neatness of her dress and for her ambition.  She has lived alone for the last several years in her White St. home and has been frequently the hostess at charming dinner parties.  Her devotion to her children’s children has been marked.
